Health classes explained

Four class tiers explained: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—their meanings and what shifts you among them.

Insurers use rate classes to price term coverage. While carriers name them differently, the tiers align: Preferred Plus (or Super Preferred/Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then table rates for above-standard risks. Tobacco users occupy a separate, costlier tier.

What underwriters look at

Height, weight, BP, lipids, family cardiac or cancer history before age 60, driving history, RX profile, job, pastimes, and tobacco status all count. Preferred Plus demands clean scores across almost everything; Preferred is more flexible; Standard Plus and Standard OK managed situations like regulated high BP.

How to use the quote tool

When you rate your health, be honest. Excellent aligns with Preferred Plus; Very good with Preferred; Good with Standard Plus; Average with Standard. Quotes use your stated class; underwriting sets the actual one. Torn between classes? Get quotes for both and let the application choose. Inflating your health won't cut the price—it just makes the estimate wrong.

Susman Insurance Agency assists you finding insurers with lenient rules for your particular health situation—often more impactful than advertised rates.
